Panama advanced to the
quarterfinales
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 5, 2007.-
Panama advanced to the quarterfinals of the Men’s Pan American Cup
with a 27-25, 25-18, 26-24 victory over Trinidad & Tobago in Pool
B of the event.
Jose Cunningham and Domingo Avila led Panama with 16 and 11 points
respectively while Trinidadian Nolan Tash and Marc Honore scored
24 a nd 12.
While the first set was a close battle from start to finish,
Panama was the better team on the court from the second set on
with better technique and taking advantage of their opponents’
mistakes. The Panamanians saw a wide margin reduced in the third
set but recovered to prevail.
“We took advantage of their errors and it is a great triumph for
us,” said José Remón, the Panamanian Coach. “It is good for us to
be able to move to the next round.”
“It is a very disappointing loss for our team,” said Gideon
Dickson, the coach of Trinidad & Tobago. “We made too many
unforced errors and paid the price.”
